The Power of Choice

I have choice on my mind. Let me explain what I mean. Over the last month I’ve spoken with my private clients and tons of new people at the many workshops, networking events and seminars I’ve attended. Here’s what I noticed: people are struggling with being “overwhelmed.”





To be overwhelmed literally means you are drowning beneath a huge mass. Have you ever said, "I can't take this! I'm so overwhelmed!" But are you truly drowning? No, this is just an entrenched thought form; a way of reacting to the arrival of new opportunity, responsibility or crisis. So really it’s a learned choice (habit) to respond in a way that makes you feel like you are drowning. Sounds crazy, right? Why would you purposely and consciously choose to drown?

Happy Fourth of July! This is always one of my favorite holidays. When I think of what our forefathers did to create a system of government that was meant to provide justice and freedom for all, it just blows me away. What they did was not conventional and absolutely disruptive. They turned the world upside down. Yet they took a stand and held their ground and today you and I enjoy the fruits of their labor.

(VIDEO) Do you do you?

A fascinating aspect of being a coach is noticing when patterns arise in what my clients are dealing with on their journeys. One that keeps surfacing is the idea of self-care. Or, more accurately, the lack of it because taking care of others is the “right thing” to do. While that is indeed a noble concept it comes at a great price to your own quality of life and effectiveness in business. Have you noticed that the people, places and things that used to matter to you have been put on a shelf because you are too busy pleasing other people?

Case in point, I recently attended an emergency preparedness training. The Army Sergeant who led the course repeatedly stressed that in a disaster you must take care of yourself first so you can then tend to others who need your help around you. And in every day life, if you don’t make sure your body, mind and soul are nourished then you can’t effectively be of service to the clients that pay you and the family, friends and community that rely on you. When you don’t practice self-care you are creating the conditions for your own personal disaster.

Are they boring or just shy?


Here's this week's Questions Savvy Business Owners Ask Me. I shot it in my dentist's office at CORE Smiles New York while I was waiting for my anesthetic to kick in. 

OK, here's a great question one of my clients asked:

"Richard, what do I do when I'm at a gala dinner and I've paid $700 for this event and I'm stuck at the table next to, well, boring people?"

March 2014 Newsletter Message: People Are the Conduits of Money

We’re practically running through the Raleigh-Durham airport praying that we don’t miss our flight. The security clearance line is atrocious and the prospect of missing our flight is thick in the air.


Our destination is Gate C20 and we have nineteen more to pass. As we scurry past each gate the three of us are chatting about the value of switching flights versus spending time at the airport waiting for a delayed flight and that’s when my colleague says, “Richard, money is a …”
